i don't get poker. i've only played it twice, though.
but the first time i risked a lot and lost dreadfully.
then the second and last time i tried to be a bit more careful and watch other players' moves.
but i got so bored that i just wanted it to be over and go home. so i decided to risk everything.
surprisingly enough, i won.
that's why you won, Mary

you have to be ready to lose everything to be able to win

I gambled my hair once (drunken Vegas thing). I lost, but you see, actually, when I leaned on a wonder, the hair would veil it. Losing my hair revealed the wonder beyond the veil.
They all thought I had lost, but I had them fooled, because I had entered the game knowing I could only win.
How does that story go again? I can't remember, but someone asks the Vizier why he's been so succesful, and he answers that he never entered a room while leaving a foot on the other side of the door.
It's the same in war or in poker (not much of a player myself) I guess. If you refuse to take any risk you cannot win. You have to put enough chips on the table (enough troops on the field) in order to win. Then you win or lose, but if you play timid and refuse to engage enough then you cannot win (unless you are really lucky of course).
As for the Vizier, he also said he never entered a room without checking his exit routes. :-)
Life is not a gamble Amnesia. Maybe it's not a war, but it's not a gamble. Fight the bear, cross the chasm, kiss the princess awake. Yes, you have to be ready to lose everything. Y se despierta la princesa.
